What are Immediate Implants
Immediate implants are a way of placing a dental implant and a new replacement tooth on the same day. Instead of wearing a loose denture while the implant heals, many patients can leave our practice with a fixed tooth already in place, enjoying a confident smile and comfortable chewing much sooner.
At Lidums Dental this approach is carefully planned using X rays and scans to check that the bone and gums are healthy enough to support an immediate implant. It can be an excellent option after trauma or tooth loss when you want to restore your smile quickly without compromising on strength or appearance.
Not everyone is suitable, so we look for good bone quality, healthy soft tissue, and the ability to follow a thorough after care routine while the implant integrates. When these boxes are ticked, immediate implants can offer a predictable, convenient solution that feels and looks very similar to a natural tooth.

How Immediate Implants work
Immediate implants are planned very carefully before the day of treatment. At your consultation we take detailed X rays and 3D scans to check the health of your jaw bone and gums and to map out the exact position of the implant. This lets us see whether an immediate approach is suitable and gives you a clear idea of what to expect.
On the day, the failing tooth is removed and the implant is placed into the prepared site in the same visit. In many cases we can then attach a custom temporary tooth to the implant straight away, so you walk out without a gap or loose denture. Local anaesthetic is used so you stay comfortable throughout the procedure.
Over the next few months the implant bonds with the bone while you follow our after care instructions and attend review visits. Once healing is complete, the temporary tooth is replaced with a strong, long term crown that matches your other teeth in shape and colour, giving you a secure, natural feeling smile.

Recovery time for immediate dental implants: what to expect
At Lidums Dental, careful planning and modern techniques are used to make implant treatment as comfortable as possible. It is normal to have some tenderness, swelling or bruising for a few days as your mouth heals, especially in the first 48 hours. Many people who have one or two implants without bone grafting feel ready to return to normal daily activities within a day or two, while more complex cases may take a little longer.
Our team will give you clear after care instructions tailored to your situation. This may include sticking to softer foods for a short time, keeping the area clean with gentle brushing and mouth rinses, and using appropriate over the counter pain relief if needed, as advised by your dentist. Follow up visits are scheduled to check healing and make sure your implant and new tooth are on track for a strong, long term result.

Immediate Implants FAQs
How is an immediate implant different from a standard (staged) implant, which is better?
Neither is universally better, they suit different situations. A staged implant involves extracting the tooth, waiting several weeks for the socket to heal, then placing the implant in a second procedure. This is sometimes necessary where infection is present, bone is limited, or healing needs to be confirmed first. An immediate implant places the implant into the extraction socket on the same day, skipping the healing wait. When the conditions are right, immediate placement can be equally predictable — the key is careful case selection, which is why not everyone qualifies.
Will I leave the appointment with a visible tooth, or will there be a gap?
In most suitable cases, yes. A temporary crown is attached to the implant on the same day, so you leave with a tooth in place rather than a gap. This temporary crown is functional but intentionally made so it doesn’t take full biting force while the implant is integrating. It is designed to look presentable so you can go about your normal life without feeling self-conscious. The final permanent crown is fitted once healing is confirmed, usually several months later.
Can immediate implants be used anywhere in the mouth, or only for certain teeth?
Immediate placement works well in many positions, but some locations are more predictable than others. Front teeth in the upper jaw, for example, have specific aesthetic demands around gum contour and bone support that require very careful planning. Back teeth carry heavier biting forces that must be managed during healing. The position of the tooth, the shape of the socket after extraction, the angle of the bone, and the quality of surrounding tissue all factor into whether immediate placement is the right approach for a specific site.
What makes someone not suitable for an immediate implant?
The main disqualifying factors are active infection in or around the tooth being extracted, insufficient bone density or volume at the extraction site, uncontrolled systemic conditions that impair healing (such as poorly managed diabetes), and heavy smoking. If any of these apply, a staged approach, where the area is given time to heal before the implant is placed, is usually the safer and more predictable path. This is determined at your consultation using detailed X-rays and 3D scans, not guesswork.
Do immediate implants have a higher failure rate than staged implants?
When properly selected and planned, immediate implants have comparable long-term success rates to staged implants. The critical factor is case selection, placing an immediate implant in a patient or site that isn’t suitable increases risk. At Lidums Dental, the assessment is thorough precisely because we want the result to be predictable. Cutting corners on suitability assessment is where failure rates rise; careful planning is what makes the difference between a reliable outcome and a preventable complication.
What restrictions apply during the healing period, and how long before the final crown is fitted?
During the integration period, typically 3–5 months, the temporary crown should not take direct biting force. You will be asked to avoid biting hard foods directly on the implant site and to follow a gentle cleaning routine. Physical contact sports with facial impact risk should be avoided or appropriate protection worn. Once osseointegration is confirmed at your review appointment, the final crown is made and fitted, usually in two appointments. From that point, the implant functions like a natural tooth with no ongoing dietary restrictions.
