Emergency Dentist Adelaide

Toothache, swelling, or a broken tooth and not sure what to do next?

Need fast relief and clear answers without feeling rushed?

The Lidums Difference in Emergency Dentistry

At Lidums Dental, emergency dentistry is not only about fixing a problem quickly, but about helping you feel safe, comfortable, and supported while we take control of what is happening. We know dental pain can be exhausting and frightening, especially when it comes on suddenly or escalates overnight.

With more than 40 years of experience, our team takes a calm, structured approach to urgent dental situations. We focus on gentle pain relief first, careful diagnosis second, and a clear plan third, so you understand what caused the issue, what needs to happen next, and what you can do to prevent it from returning. This comfort first, plan with precision philosophy mirrors the same patient centred approach you use across your cosmetic care.

What is Emergency Dentistry?

Relief when you need it most, with a plan that protects your long term health.

Emergency dentistry is care for sudden dental pain, swelling, trauma, or tooth damage that cannot comfortably wait. It can include severe toothache, infection, a cracked or broken tooth, a lost filling or crown, bleeding, or an accident affecting the mouth.

At Lidums Dental, emergency care always begins with stabilising your discomfort, then identifying the true cause. This matters because many emergencies are symptoms of something deeper, such as infection, a crack, nerve inflammation, or gum disease. After diagnosing the issue, we’ll provide clear explanations of your treatment options and guide you towards the best course of action for your recovery.

When you should seek urgent care?

If you have swelling, fever, spreading pain, difficulty swallowing, or trauma to the face or jaw, please contact us as soon as possible. If you feel unwell or symptoms escalate rapidly, seek urgent medical attention.

Emergency Dentist FAQs

We prioritise emergency appointments and aim to see urgent cases as quickly as possible — in many instances on the same day, particularly for severe pain, facial swelling, or trauma. The best course of action is to call us directly on (08) 7223 2342 so our team can triage your situation and get you in as soon as possible. If you are experiencing spreading swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or significant trauma to the face, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Time is critical. If the tooth is an adult tooth, handle it by the crown only (not the root), gently rinse it with milk or saline if dirty, and try to reinsert it into the socket immediately. If that’s not possible, store it in milk or between your cheek and gum to keep it moist, never in water. Call us immediately and come in as soon as possible. The chances of saving a knocked-out tooth drop significantly after 30–60 minutes, so speed matters more than anything else.

Dental pain can sometimes ease temporarily, but this rarely means the underlying cause has resolved. A nerve that has died, an abscess that has partially drained, or a crack that shifts under pressure can all cause pain to subside and then return worse. Ignoring dental pain almost always allows the underlying problem to progress, which can mean more complex and costly treatment later, and in cases involving infection, a genuine health risk. If you have dental pain, it’s always worth having it assessed rather than waiting.

Emergency situations can feel particularly overwhelming when you’re already in pain and distress. Our team is experienced in managing anxious patients and takes a calm, unhurried approach even in urgent situations — explaining what we’re doing at each step and ensuring you feel in control. For patients with significant dental anxiety, IV sedation is available, including for emergency appointments where appropriate. Pain relief is always prioritised first so you’re comfortable before any further assessment or treatment proceeds.

An emergency appointment focuses on relieving pain and stabilising the situation. Depending on the cause, definitive treatment, such as a root canal, crown, or extraction, may require one or more follow-up appointments. This is standard practice and allows us to be thorough rather than rushed. At the end of your emergency visit, you’ll have a clear understanding of what caused the problem, what has been done to stabilise it, and what next steps are recommended with estimated costs and timing.

Many emergency treatments, including examinations, X-rays, and emergency fillings or extractions, attract a rebate under most mid-to-high-level dental cover policies. The exact rebate depends on your fund and level of cover. Lidums Dental accepts all major health funds including Bupa, HCF, Medibank, and nib. We always provide a clear fee outline before treatment proceeds so there are no surprises, and payment plan options are available if needed.
