A Prosthodontist is a specialist in reconstructive and cosmetic procedures with skills and training beyond that of general dental training. Just like an Orthopaedic Surgeon fixes broken bones, a Prosthodontist fixes broken teeth. A Cosmetic Dentist is a General Dentist who provides some Cosmetic Procedures. Most General Dentists should be able to provide some level of cosmetic care.

What is a Prosthodontist?

Prostho­don­tists are the only Den­tal Board-registered spe­cial­ists trained to an expert level to restore or replace teeth using veneers, crowns, bridges, implants and den­tures.  They have rig­or­ous train­ing in all aspects of restora­tive (or recon­struc­tive) and cos­metic den­tistry with par­tic­u­lar empha­sis on over­all treat­ment plan­ning and long-term suc­cess. Rather than sim­ply pro­vid­ing cos­metic solu­tions which focus on the way things look, they have the in-depth knowl­edge to diag­nose and treat under­ly­ing prob­lems as part of the over­all treatment.

Most gen­eral den­tists pro­vide some level of cos­metic den­tal ser­vices, which pro­vide valu­able improve­ments for many peo­ple. If the sit­u­a­tion is par­tic­u­larly dif­fi­cult or com­plex, or some­one wishes to achieve a truly out­stand­ing result they may pre­fer to seek spe­cial­ist care. The sev­eral addi­tional years of for­mal train­ing and exper­tise pro­vides extra peace of mind.  Prostho­don­tists are acknowl­edged by their peers as being in the top-tier of den­tal experts in Australia.

Knowl­edge­able den­tists recog­nise the skills and expe­ri­ence of Prostho­don­tists and reg­u­larly refer patients to ensure excep­tional out­comes. For over 20 years, we have enjoyed refer­rals from hun­dreds of expe­ri­enced den­tists, den­tal spe­cial­ists and cos­metic sur­geons from across Aus­tralia to address prob­lems which are con­sid­ered more com­plex and may require a full mouth approach or spe­cialised skills. How­ever, no refer­ral is required for con­sul­ta­tion. Some peo­ple do not have a reg­u­lar den­tist and are able to come to us directly.
